Texas! A Needlework
Map
Explore dyeing linen and threads and using
those materials with counted and surface embroidery techniques as a
needlework map emerges with all the detail found in antique maps:
Old style lettering (including script and flourish), a compass rose,
meridian lines, cartouche inserts framing details of the map maker
and map, whales and motifs which make the map unique to the
wonderful state of Texas! The general design of this map is based on
existing maps from the 1800’s in coloring, style, and lettering.
Contemporary motifs include the state quilt and flag and flora and
fauna which characterize the expansive and diverse nature of the
state. The final detail of the map includes fabric painting of the
shoreline as we explore contemporary techniques applied to old world
inspiration!

A Knot Garden
This beautiful knot
garden interpreted in an antique palette lies behind the stone walls;
counted and surface embroidery are combined with hand dyed linen and
fabric painting to add exquisite detail and emphasis. This class will
focus on perfecting the double running stitch so that accurate, straight
lines can be made when needed and that same stitch can be used to
interpret curves and circles smoothly. Counted and surface embroidery
add fine texture and color to the vintage palette flower sections. Small
touches of fabric paint are used to mark emphasis in the design. These
are easy techniques, which when done properly, add to a design to make
it very special. Come and learn about vintage palettes and how color,
patterning, and stitch selection are used to contribute to a design’s
theme – A Knot Garden will be a special heirloom treasure!

Family Tree Sampler
Your family tree sampler is an
exciting and original way to display your family heritage in a
beautiful sampler with family names embedded within tree branches. A
variety of surface embroidery and counted techniques are used
throughout the sampler. Participants begin their sampler “tree”
learning how to use variegated threads to produce beautiful shading;
family names are then added and branches and leaves used to produce
the tree effect.
The sampler is embellished with a
black work border having 22-24 different surface embroidery
stitch/flower motifs. A favorite saying or poem may be added to
compliment the sampler. A pastoral setting will be embellished
with trees, bushes, and any additional motifs to personalize the
design (ex. sheep, angels, cats, dogs, people, etc.).
The sampler is worked on student’s
choice of linen and is approximately 12” X 16”. It is stitched with
over dyed, variegated Medici wool, flower thread, and cotton floss.
Participants should bring a scroll frame to class, but may work the
piece in hand.
This
is a fun and challenging class in design and contemporary sampler
making; the finished sampler is sure to become a family heirloom!
