Etui with Black Work Sewing Roll A delicate black work needle roll complements the scrolls and flourish of this silver plate etui – a reproduction from the original sterling-silver case c. 1780. The needle roll is worked on 38 count Graziano® white linen using both surface and counted techniques and embellished with the stitcher’s script initial. In this class we will cover the steps involved in creating and transferring designs easily, making double-running (Holbein) stitches so that they make a perfectly straight line or a smooth curve, working random eyelets as a filling, and various techniques for shading black work. Learn to start and end tails invisibly as well as work a secure four-sided stitch fringed edging. Additional accessories include beaded fobs for the needle threader and the larger needle which can be used as a laying tool and eyelet hole enlarger. The sewing roll is finished with a black felt needle keep inside. Etui: 3 ¼” tall x 1 ½” wide x 5/8” deep Needle roll: 2 ¾” x 4 ¼” 1 or 2 day class

Creating Needlework Maps Come and explore the exciting world of needlework mapmaking as color effects along with counted and surface embroidery techniques are all combined to produce an original old style needlework map. Each map will be designed with all the fine details found in antique maps: Classic style lettering (including script and flourish), a compass rose, meridian lines, wind symbols, cartouche inserts framing details of the map maker and map, mermaids, sea serpents, whales and any other motifs which would characterize the geographical and historical aspects of your selected region. This class will introduce students to vintage and illusory coloring effects and palettes, layout options, and some of the key components of historically important and valuable needlework maps and pictures. The final detail of each map includes fabric painting as we explore contemporary techniques applied to old world inspiration! 2 day intermediate class.
Heirloom Journal Sampler Come and learn how fabric painting can add depth and beauty as a landscape backdrop for counted and surface embroidery techniques. The project is a diminutive journal cover (3” x 4”). This class takes fabric painting to the next level with the addition of basic techniques for mixing colors to reflect landscape perspective as colors become de-saturated and more vintage and sampler-like. The back cover of the journal is reserved for the maker’s mark, date, and bluebird of happiness - all enclosed in a vine cartouche. This class will introduce fabric painting, a few detailed stitches – Queen, French knot, and Detached buttonhole, and easy finishing techniques to embellish this lovely heirloom journal. Available as a kit. 1/2 day class.
Joy's Soul Journal Cover A delightful journal cover ( 3" x 4") that expands fabric painting techniques and stitches with the addition of a painted sky and row of square eyelets to the cover. Shakespeare's quote reflects the spirit of working this beautiful journal cover. 1 day class for all levels.
A Knot Garden This beautiful knot garden interpreted in an antique palette lies behind the stone walls; counted and surface embroidery are combined with hand dyed linen and fabric painting to add exquisite detail and emphasis. This class will focus on perfecting the double running stitch so that accurate, straight lines can be made when needed and that same stitch can be used to interpret curves and circles smoothly. Counted and surface embroidery add fine texture and color to the vintage palette flower sections. Small touches of fabric paint are used to mark emphasis in the design. These are easy techniques, which when done properly, add to a design to make it very special. Come and learn about vintage palettes and how color, patterning, and stitch selection are used to contribute to a design’s theme – A Knot Garden will be a special heirloom treasure! 1/2 -1 day class (Intermediate)
The Great Lakes Needlework Map The Great Lakes of North America and the surrounding waterways make up the world’s largest fresh water system and centerpiece of this needlework map. Our map depicts the lakes and surrounding areas with details found in vintage pen and ink hand-drawn and painted maps: Roman, script, and block lettering, a compass rose, scale of miles, a parchment-like cartouche of the title, and a pack of wolf wind blowers! The state quilts are an added feature highlighting the regional state quilts. This class will introduce students to all the fine details of making reversible map lines as well as completely straight couched meridian lines. The many water areas will be hand-painted as was done on early maps. Each map will be customized so that home towns, special motifs, and lettering will personalize a wonderful heirloom for each student. Class time will cover an antique hem stitched mitered corner finish and a companion friendship booklet for practice with fabric painting. 2 day class |
