Designing Your Monogram or Cipher
Initials, ciphers, and monograms have been used for hundreds of years to mark linens and textiles in addition to simply being beautiful embellishments. This class will allow each student to learn the techniques of creating their individual cipher or monogram using counted techniques. Our project will be a book cover for a small accordion folded insert featuring the cipher on the front cover and a bookplate-like cartouche on the back cover. Finishing techniques, fabric painting, and the optional button closure will ensure this becomes a special heirloom.
Intermediate design class. 3 - 4 hours

The Color Square
Come and explore the characteristics of color with a hands-on adventure working with hue, saturation, and value! This class explores the interrelationships of these characteristics, why they are related, and how and why some combinations blend beautifully and others produce striping and unevenness. Our project will be a color square that utilizes hue, saturation, and value to the extreme level; we will illustrate how optical blending and simultaneous contrast work and how each can be utilized for desirable effects. By the end of this class students will fully understand how to use the characteristics of color for optimal applications on future projects. 1 day class for all levels.
