MISCELLANEOUS  CLASSES

Designing Your Monogram or Cipher

Initials, ciphers, and monograms have been used for hundreds of years to mark linens and textiles in addition to simply being beautiful embellishments. This class will allow each student to learn the techniques of creating their individual cipher or monogram using counted techniques. Our project will be a book cover for a small accordion folded insert featuring the cipher on the front cover and a bookplate-like cartouche on the back cover. Finishing techniques, fabric painting, and the optional button closure will ensure this becomes a special heirloom.  Intermediate design class. 3 - 4 hours

Silk Ribbon Embroidery

A beautiful bouquet of mixed flowers incorporating both over dyed cotton floss and silk ribbon embellishes a sweet bag that can be used as a tooth fairy pouch, potpourri bag or ring bearer’s pillow! Students will have a choice of colors to select from Catherine’s extensive collection of over dyed floss and ribbon, so that each design is a unique heirloom. Class time will cover selecting a color palette, properly threading and using silk ribbon, surface embroidery stitches with time allowed for instructions on finishing and for making a corded tassel tie. 1/2 - 1 day class (all levels)

Tea Time - Introduction to Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Tea time has always been a special event and preparing a unique place setting makes your time with friends sharing tea a delight! A simple silk ribbon floral embellishes your napkin which holds a tea bag and sugar.  Students will have a choice of colors to select from Catherine’s extensive collection of over dyed floss and ribbon, so that each design will be a unique heirloom. Class time will cover selecting a color palette, properly threading and using silk ribbon, surface embroidery stitches and how to fold your napkin. Your kit comes with 2 napkins (one for you and one for a friend), cotton floss, silk ribbon, needles in felt, and tea related items to fill the napkin. Bring your favorite tea cup and enjoy tea time during class as we explore working with silk ribbon and this easily finished project. 3 hour class for all levels.

Felting! (Needle felting and Flat felting)

Come and learn everything you would like to know about felting wool – needle felting, felting flat pieces of wool,  incorporating colorfully dyed wool onto a piece of flat felt,  how to make 3-dimensional forms such as dolls, and making needle felts and pin cushions! This is a fun and mess-free class that explores the use of felt and wool fibers. While there is no set project for this class, in class students will felt a piece of flat wool with a colorful design of their choosing and make a needle felt and felted pin cushion. Students will also leave class with their own pair of felting needles and supplies and materials to explore further felting adventures on their own! Class time will include discussion of the felting process and ideas for further projects such as needle cases, purses, and stump work applications. 3 hour class (all levels)
